Sustrans are the charity making it easier for people to walk and cycle. They connect people and places, working to create liveable neighbourhoods, transform the school run and deliver a happier, healthier commute. Sustrans works in partnership, bringing people together to find the right solutions.

As part of their mission, Sustrans are the custodians of the National Cycle Network. This is a UK-wide network of signed paths and routes for walking, cycling, wheeling and exploring outdoors.

The Need.

Like any sizeable organisation, Sustrans needs to provide suitable technology to their staff, to enable them to efficiently fulfil their roles. The in-house IT team identified a business need to improve the email solution they provided; they recognised that the existing, internally hosted version of Microsoft Exchange, was reaching end of life, and required a companywide user Migration to Office 365. This was an early step towards a wider strategic goal to move more of their business estate to the cloud.

Sustrans decided to partner with an organisation that could bring additional Microsoft expertise to assist in the first stages of their project – That organisation was Stripe OLT.

The Solution.

We started with an Office-365 e-mail migration for 600+ users.

In today’s connected workplace, moving away from traditional legacy e-mail environments and into Office 365 is now essential. Users not only require a secure solution that will let them access emails from any device, from any location, but they also need a mail box without a maximum storage limit.

By migrating e-mails to the cloud, Sustrans’ workforce can now securely access e-mails as and when required and importantly without receiving the dreaded ‘mail box limit reached’ message. This was an issue before the migration at Sustrans, and one that has now been alleviated.

How did we achieve this?

Before rolling out the new Office 365 solution to their workforce, we carried out pilot group testing to ensure there were no system bugs or security weaknesses within their new cloud solution. In doing this we could ensure the migration process was slick and uninterrupted.

In addition to migrating their users, we ensured their Security solution was robust enough to protect and support their users.

Microsoft 365 comes with a number of security features that ensure your organisation remains secure in the cloud. For the solution at Sustrans, we included:

  • Email protection from malware, including anti-spam filtering and antivirus software.

  • Microsoft attachment and link checking. This was enabled to detect malicious actors, attempting to plant malware and steal credentials.

With the rise of widely dispersed networks, remote workforces and accelerating cloud adoption (to name a few), new cyber-security challenges have surfaced. As such, we additionally ran an assessment on their e-mail usage, to identify if any extra protection and archiving software was required.

Following this assessment, we also helped to implement Barracuda security software, to complement their existing 365 solution and provide full Microsoft 365 backup capability.
